Living Marina at Royal Quays
May 5, 2021
Check out this little installation video of our project at Royal Quays Marina demonstrating our ongoing work to develop solutions for Living Marinas and Floating Estuarine Ecosystems. The Biomatrix team installed a 5D oak-edged Floating Ecosystem filled with LECA and cedar mulch to support the plants at the Royal Quays Marina in North Shields, England this month. The Floating Ecosystem consisted of 22 5D modules for a total ecosystem area of 52m2. It also has 33m of Scottish Oak Edging, and 5000 litres of LECA and cedar mulch planting media. It was planted with 600 halophytes, salt-tolerant plants. We’ve also included an 8 m2 nesting bed on one end of the island for swans, terns, and other birds. This project was for Groundwork Northeast and the Royal Quays Marina. Other partners in the project include the Environment Agency and the Tyne Estuary Partnership.
